Regular weekly sessions are taking place at Rocklands on Wednesdays from 5.30 onwards. Newcomers always welcome. The recent superb Summer weather has facilitated the regular sessions. Feel free to come along even for the social outing.
Latest news is that another two members (Tom and Stefan) have completed their Single Pitch training (SPA) last week end so there are lots more experienced helpers available.
Cable rock at Bray Head provided some enjoyable and challenging climbing for a small group of club members on Sat June 21st. An invigorating location with the waves crashing/lapping created some difficulty at times for communication. Climbs are accessed by abseiling down and exit is via the classic ‘Cricklewood’ (severe).
An adventurous and energetic group enjoyed the lovely warm rock of the South ridge of Coumshingaun on Sat Jun 14th. They descended towards the lake and climbed the SW gully of the coum. The group then walked to the Mahon valley ridge and took the skyline route before returning lowlevel back to Kilclooney wood.
A hardy bunch of 6 continued to The King’s Yard, in the southern foothills of the Galtees, to camp Sat night. This is a terrific mountain facility with shower, toilets and a small kitchen which was equipped with fridge, electric rings and microwave! A recycled washing machine drum was provided for the ‘campfire’. A clear, moonlit night and a distant soothing sound of a mountain stream all added to a perfect campsite.
Another troop arrived from Wexford on Sunday morning for the scheduled walk. The walk started up through the Glounreagh valley. A steep climb led to spot height 629m before heading towards Carrignabinnia. From here the Galtee wall is an easy navigation feature towards Galtymore. Descent was via Knockduff and Knocknagalty back to The King’s Yard. Some members went for a dip in the river to cool off.
A terrific mountaineering wk end all round especially for the 6 who took on all the challenges put before them!
Regular climbing sessions are in full swing at Rocklands every Wednesday evening. Feel free to come along and give it a try or brush up on some previously learned skills. There are club harnesses and helmets available on loan for newcomers.
