Fantastic Winter weather greeted the enthusiastic group who headed to Glenmalure for the week end. Despite horrendous forecasts the group was rewarded with a beautiful calm, snowy white day. Views were splendid apart from the last 50m or so of height around the summit of Lugnaquilla.
Great route led by Mick Wall for the Moderate walk which went from Drumgoff Recreation car park to Lug and returned via Kelly’s Lough. Mick would like it recorded in his favour that he returned with more people that he started out with!
Mick Kielthy led a slightly easier walk, with amazing views on the Southern side of the Aughavanagh road, to Crohanmoira and Faneneireann.
With brighter forecasts for day 2, here’s looking forward to more Wicklow adventures!
A hardy troupe travelled to Rathgormack on Sun for the Mod+ walk. The walk began through the woods below the Boolas in clear conditions with views of snow covered mountains. Following an ascent of the easy gully behind the pinnacle in the Boolas the
group battled head on winds as they progressed towards Coumlara. Swirling gusts made progress up Coumlara very slow. Conditions across the plateau to 792m were more bearable. The route followed the rim of Coumshingaun and then across to Crotty’s rocks. Descent was between the buttresses and across the high moraine. A short climb out of the upper coum brought the spur of the Boolas into view. The group returned through the woods damp, weather beaten and maybe a little tired!
There was a high turn out of club walk leaders for the ‘think-in’ held at Whitford House Hotel on Sat Jan 30th 2016.
Mountaineering Ireland Training Officer shared information on what MI have to offer to club members. Appetites were whetted with Jane’s presentation on the Summer Alpine meets.
Improvements to web site guidelines for Walkers and Leaders were discussed.
Styles of leadership were outlined by Colin Gibbon, Shielbaggan. It was acknowledged that different styles may be needed at different stages of the same day with the same group.
Group discussions brought lots of support to leaders, especially those who are just starting into this role.
This was a very worthwhile and enjoyable workshop thanks to pre-planning group – Erica Whitty, Mick Wall, Liam Millar and Colette Mahon
